The Story
Opened in 1914 inside the old drugstore, the Chugwater Soda Fountain is the oldest continuously operating fountain in Wyoming — a genuine detour off I-25 for malts and a bowl of the town's famous chili.

A fun little stop on a road trip from Great Falls to Colorado Springs. This showed up on the Atlas Obscura app and, being a lover of ice cream, I knew I had to stop. My shake was creamy and delicious, as was my mom's root beer float. Our burgers were perfectly cooked and the famous Chugwater chili made for some excellent chili cheese fries. Absolutely worth the short detour!

I was so excited to finally make it here but was slightly disappointed. There was very little ambition (one of the three the ladies in the front seemed to have some). There was no whipped cream for the milkshake and then when paying we were told that some more could have been made but that lady had no idea. You can see right into the kitchen which we always appreciate but the lady was not wearing gloves as she was touching the buns and ready to eat foods with bare hands. I’m pretty sure that’s against the food rules… I did appreciate the local beef for the burgers and the food overall was pretty good and mostly homemade which is a harder thing to find!

Good old timey soda fountain with solid burgers and fries. Old fashioned sodas are good as well. A little slow service but they do their best.
