The Story

The Dairy Bar on Main Street hums with the sweet nostalgia of a bygone era, a perfect little slice of Americana to pause and unwind. Inside, the air is thick with the scent of sugar and smiles, promising a delightful escape from the highway hum. Each creamy scoop or frosty shake served up is a little taste of comfort, making Whitley City feel like home.

Tasted Fried Cod Sandwich, Cajun Fries, Fried Pickles, and Philly Cheesesteak (best for last). Stopped by for the first time after tubing on the Blue Heron and was immediately excited after experiencing 50s staples on repeat, different Mustang models on the wall, and inviting counter seating. Although I’m not from the time period, the atmosphere was exactly as described in The Outsiders, so I was satisfied. After being seated outside by the kind but busy waitress, I was disappointed by my initial main and side. I had high hopes for the Fried Cod Sandwich, as I noted dishes being prepared from scratch during my arrival. This particular sandwich must not be on the from-scratch list. The fried cod itself was noticeably pre-frozen and soggy. The lettuce lacked all kinds of crunch, and the bought-in tartar was missing a substantial amount of zest. Unfortunately, the only redeeming factor was the shipped-in hoagie bun and fresh-cut tomato. 3/10 The Cajun Fries were a similar sad story. To put it simply, I’ve had the same Sysco-supplied frozen fry from about 50 other restaurants in the US. The Cajun seasoning failed at redeeming the side. This is not due to a lack of the seasoning itself, but a definite lack in Cajun flavor, interestingly enough. 4/10 An unexpected positive from the night were the fried pickles, which were introduced by the waitress’s honest comment—“They look like McDonald’s French fries. Most people don’t like that. Just thought I’d warn ya.” Despite the warning, I greatly enjoyed the grainy batter around the perfectly cooked pickles, and I personally had no gripe with the peculiar shape. The only drawback is the inconsistency in my particular batch. Some were perfectly crisp and crunchy, others were unignorably limp and soggy. A consistent batch would put this unique twist on a common side high on my list. 6/10 I am very thankful for Dairy Bar’s Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich. Not just because it provides me with something overwhelmingly positive to say on the review but because I no longer have to drive 10 hours to get an authentic Philly Cheese. The bun is spot on in the way it almost wraps around the contents. The creamy provolone is integrated throughout all of the perfectly seasoned and cooked beef (which is proper rather than just being laid on top). The red and green peppers do not overpower the flavor, but are easily identifiable. That being said, the peppers were the only misstep. They lacked the crunch needed to break up the wave of rich flavors/textures typically found in the famous sandwich. I found them to be a bit rubbery. Overall, Taking a bite makes you feel like you’re in the streets of Philly standing next to some form of fecal matter (the only real way to do it). I will be returning for this. 9.5/10

This is probably the best authentic diner I’ve ever been to. The vibe here is everything. Small town Americana and delicious food. Everything was top notch.

A great little 50's feel good joint. If you've ever had Frisch's or you like Frisch's.... This is the place for you. Oldies playing in the background..... Similar to Frisch's burgers, hot fudge sundae..... Absolutely delicious! Highly recommend
