    I grew up in New Berlin not knowing this place existed. I was torn between a burger and the sloppy Joe so I ordered both. The sloppy Joe was very good and reminded me of my mothers’. The burger was decent also. I washed it down with a root beer. I would stop again to try the custard as I left no room.

    AcWauwatosa landmark, found in 1938, Gilles is Wisconsin's oldest continuously operating fast-food restaurant and frozen custard stand. It is the oldest for a reason. Excellent product. Still family owned and operated. In fact, when ai visited on 9/5/25, my fresh pack custard was prepared by the general manager, who is a descendant (? Great grandson?) of founder Paul Gilles. The custard here is rich, smooth, creamy. It is so fresh. TiP: Request fresh pack vanilla, chocolate, flavor of the day and/or flavor of the month in either a pint or quart size. It is truly the freshest custard you will ever savor. Service is always excellent. Most highly recommend. A true destination

    Burger was ok, chocolate shake was good. I will return. A must visit place while in Milwaukee.

    We wanted to like it, but burger just was not hot and kinda felt like it had been sitting and just maybe slightly re heated + assembled after our order. Diet Coke tasted like the chemicals used to clean the soda machines. My guess was that this place may have been great in its hey day but not anymore. We didn’t try the ice cream due to our disappointment although the custard Did look good.
