The Story

Hildebrandt's makes its own ice cream and its own chocolates, and serves both across the same worn counter it has used since Calvin Coolidge was in office. Locals come for lunch and stay for a sundae in a tulip glass.

A few of us went this past Thursday evening at around 8pm and it was quite busy; unfortunately only one worker was there and was being pulled in way too many directions. This employee was a true professional though: so very knowledgeable, patient, friendly and on top of things. We were nothing but impressed by this employee's work ethic and attitude. Why on earth though would a business, let alone a thriving one, leave a teenager all alone in an ice cream store in the evening during the summer to handle so much responsibility? Another employee showed up around 9pm. I really hope our server is being compensated appropriately by the owner of the business. You have a winner of an employee here. The ice cream itself was good, but a bit overpriced. We know it's homemade, but still. For example, nine dollars for a scoop with no add ons is crazy. The ambiance is great as who doesn't love an old school ice cream shop. Four stars for leaving this poor employee on their own.

Brought my nephews here looking for a treat. Walked in at 6:35 pm. Lights were already dimmed & ready for closing. Although 7 pm is official closing time. Informed ice cream was for take out only. The staff did not appear motivated. Seemed more bothered by our patronage instead. A few customers in front of us left after feeling shunned. I would’ve done the same except the kids were looking forward to Hildebrant’s. $16.25 for a brownie sundae is good enough to share but brown bagging it just takes away any joy. Carvel’s is only down the block…

As soon as we walked in we were greeted immediately where we could choose where to sit. We only came for dessert so we sat at the bar as the FIFA games were on. We ordered a vanilla cream soda and a 2 scoop Sundae with hot fudge. The ice cream was good and not overly sweet. You can't go wrong with butterscotch and mint chip. It's a great spot if you are in the mood for a sweet treat as their ice cream is homemade. Their history shows in the restaurant and it's great to see they are still around. We look forward to coming back to have their breakfast.
