The Story

Founded in 1919 by three brothers from Greece, Leopold’s still makes ice cream from the original family recipes and serves it over the same black marble counter, now on Broughton Street. Expect a line down the block, a tutti frutti cone, and a room full of Savannah history and movie memorabilia.

We had heard a lot of about Leopold ice cream and thought to give it a try. But what we didn’t know was we had to set aside 1-2 hours for this. The line was super long and extending up to 2 blocks on the sidewalk.! But it was worth the wait. Ice cream is yummy and the store has a lot of memorabilia from when it began business back in 1900s. We got the chocolate, coffee and vanilla flavors. Pro tip: 1. downtown location is busier than the others. 2. You can get the pint sized containers from the side door without being the line.

Leopold’s Ice Cream in Savannah is truly a magical place with an incredible atmosphere inside. The ice cream was absolutely delicious — I tried the lavender flavor, and the texture was unbelievably smooth and delicate. I also tried their famous Tutti Frutti flavor, and it was amazing to taste recipes that have been loved since 1919. The whole place feels like stepping back in time. Even the chandeliers and wall lights have such elegance and charm, and the 1950s music playing inside makes the experience even more special. Definitely one of the most atmospheric ice cream shops I’ve ever visited.

Upon arriving in Savannah’s food district... the anticipation was high as we approached Leopold's Ice Cream. The long line outside, marked by a vibrant neon sign, hinted at the establishment’s storied past. Once inside, the queue moved swiftly, confirming the spot’s historical presence . We ordered our ice cream, selecting from a variety of flavors. Unfortunately while the flavors themselves were respectable, the sweetness was subdued, and the portion size felt average. The ambiance was a delight, filled with vintage movie posters and camera equipment, transporting us to an era of classic cinema and photography. Despite the minor average ice cream portions , the experience was enjoyable. However, the overall rating did not quite reach the lofty heights of five stars suggesting a return with more reservations. RATINGS & LOGISTICS: - Atmosphere: 10/10 - Food Quality: 7/10 - Service/Flow: 8/10 - Value: 4/10 - Would Return: Yes. Coming back.
