Dessert is often an afterthought. A scoop of something sweet because that’s what you’re supposed to do after dinner. Not here. At Martha Dear, the evening doesn’t end when the pizza disappears. You simply climb a flight of stairs and step into Mt. Desert Island Ice Cream, where someone has clearly rejected the notion that ice cream should be predictable. The flavor board reads like beautiful madness. Butterbeer. Thai Iced Tea. Brigadeiro. Salmiakki. Peach Allagash. Vegan Chai. You stand there for a moment, not because you’re overwhelmed, but because every flavor sounds like it has a story. This isn’t a corporate committee trying to invent the next seasonal special. This is curiosity frozen by the scoop. Nannette ordered the Butter Mint. It tasted exactly like those little pastel butter mints your grandmother kept in a crystal bowl, only richer, creamier, and somehow more elegant. Nostalgia has a dangerous habit of disappointing you. This didn’t. It exceeded the memory. I went with the Vegan Chai. I know. Some people hear “vegan ice cream” and immediately prepare themselves for compromise. Those people have never been here. Oat milk has a richness that dairy sometimes can’t match, and this proved the point beautifully. Warm chai spices, fragrant vanilla bean, an impossibly silky texture. It wasn’t trying to imitate ice cream. It was simply outstanding ice cream that happened not to contain dairy. That’s the difference between craftsmanship and marketing. Nobody here is trying to impress you with gimmicks. They aren’t chasing social media trends or building desserts that look better than they taste. They’re chasing flavor. Real flavor. Honest flavor. The kind that makes you stop talking for a minute because your brain is too busy processing what just happened. There’s a reason locals pack the place. There’s a reason visitors seek it out. There’s even a reason a former President became a regular. Politics has divided this country over almost everything, but good ice cream remains one of the few things capable of bringing people to the same counter. The best restaurants understand that a meal is a complete experience. It begins with anticipation and ends with something that leaves you smiling on the walk back to the car. Martha Dear gives you one of the finest pizzas in America. Mt. Desert Island Ice Cream makes sure you don’t forget the evening.

I came to this ice cream place with my friends and we enjoyed their selection of unique flavors. Service was fast and friendly. There was a decent amount of outdoor seating as well as a little indoor seating. A single scoop was $6 and a triple $9, so you’re better off getting a triple to split with your friends if you’re comfortable with it. I had the black sesame and my friends got chocolate and kulfi. The black sesame was really nutty and pretty good. The kulfi was rich and full of nuts and cardamom, absolutely delicious. The chocolate was pretty average. I knocked off a star because this place doesn’t do flavor testing, which I deem is a must for ice cream places, especially ones with odd flavors.

Rating: 3/10 Date Last Visited: 5/3/2026 We ordered the Triple Scoop ($8.25) with Mutabbaq, Blueberry Sour Cream, and Watermelon. The mutabbaq is good, but the fruit flavors were not good. Blueberry was alright but I couldn’t taste the sour cream at all. Watermelon was artificial and bad too. They also don’t let people sample, which is weird for an ice cream place. Overall, I would not recommend this place because paying $8+ to take a random chance on ice cream flavors is not worth it at all. At least let us sample first…

The line was huge, which gave us an idea of how good the ice cream was. The cookies and cream flavor is amazing, and we also got a seasonal brigadeiro flavor which was great.
