The Story
Northgate has been feeding North Main since 1947. The pimento cheeseburger and a thick shake is the standing order, and the booths still fill with the same families two generations later.

Wonderful place!!! This restaurant is a hidden gem in the heart of the city, with more than 20 years in business, consistently offering quality, homemade food, service, and tradition. Visiting it is like traveling back in time, discovering thousands of memories, details, and stories. The food is homemade, delicious, and plentiful. Unbeatable value for money. Be sure to try the onion rings (super crispy) and the Reuben sandwich. A must-visit!!

Ordered a "ribeye steak" sandwich plate and a bacon cheeseburger plate with two large milkshakes to-go, for a very high $54. The "ribeye steak" was from-frozen Philly cheesesteak meat, which was highly disappointing. Not at all what I was expecting (especially since there is a distinct Philly cheesesteak sandwich on the menu). The plates were ordered with onion rings, which I had heard were excellent. However, they were also from-frozen and equally disappointing. Most alarmingly, both my friend and I got gastrointestinal distress after eating here, surprising given that we rarely ever get sick eating out. Whether or not this was due to the current outbreak of cyclospora or another cause, I do not know. The checkout process was decent, and the nostalgic relics on the walls were fun to peruse. Despite this, there were uncomfortable reservations due to some Confederate-flagged memorabilia. The atmosphere is very dated, which I suppose is the point for a soda shop. However, some updates to the ambiance and sanitation would certainly be welcome. The lighting is a bit dim, and the dining area feels more like a bar than a family-friendly soda shop. Normally, I like to support mom-and-pop restaurants, but I highly doubt I will be returning here.

Some of the friendliest staff and greatest diner and soda shop classics in the entire upstate. Everyone at Northgate is an absolute treasure and the food everything you'd want and expect. The pimento cheeseburger (add bacon) was an absolute standout and be sure to get an order of the delicious onion rings.
