The Story
Payne's has been on the Scottsboro square in one form or another since 1869. The hand-squeezed orangeade and the pimento cheese sandwich are the order — locals get both, in that sequence, every time.

5 stars...except for the sweet tea, this is everything you want in a small southern city on the square in the county seat of Jackson County Alabama. The service, food, atmosphere was perfect. Lovely. Except for the sweet tea. It didn't taste home brewed using sugar. This is a southern staple! Despite this, it's a great place all around. I had the sauerkraut dog. Very good on the 250th 4th of July Saturday with family.

Amazing place to get a sandwich and an ice cream. The staff here are so friendly and kind too. I got a roast beef on rye with assorted accompaniments, it was grilled, delicious, and served promptly. Then I got the smores sundae and it was amazing too. Lots of ice cream, rich, creamy, and lots of whipped cream. Comfy cozy place with booths and tables and cute decor. Scottsboro is a small town but the ice cream and sandwich love at Payne's is big and bright!

Kudos for not having fried foods. The menu is varied with some really yummy sandwiches and salads. Food is beautifully presented. The wait staff is cheerful. The restaurant is bright and clean. I highly recommend this place in good conscience
