Shirley’s Homemade Ice Cream is one of my mandatory stops whenever I’m in Talkeetna during climbing season. The fireweed ice cream is absolutely incredible. I know some people hear “fireweed ice cream” and immediately look confused, but trust me, it’s ridiculously good. One of those Alaska-only things that instantly becomes part of the trip once you try it. The portions are generous too, so you actually get a serious cup of ice cream instead of three decorative spoonfuls pretending to be dessert. Honestly for the price it’s a great deal, especially considering you’re getting something unique to Alaska instead of the usual lower-48 flavors. As the author of Lost at Windy Corner (Denali Solo Climb) and The Motivated Amateur’s Guide to Winter Camping, I spend a lot of time in Talkeetna before and after expeditions, and places like this become part of the whole Denali experience. The owner has always been super nice, and there are white-painted picnic benches outside that are perfect for sitting around, people watching, and enjoying the short Alaska summer while everybody wanders through town. Funny enough, Talkeetna somehow manages to feel both relaxed and chaotic during climbing season at the exact same time, and sitting outside with fireweed ice cream kind of captures that perfectly. Really fun little Alaska ice cream stop and absolutely worth trying for the fireweed flavor alone.

Stopped by for a quick dessert. The owner showed me a video of Ms. Shirley picking the alaskan fireweed by her hands. She uses a vanilla base to blend the fireweed flavor in. It is definitely a new flavor that I haven't tried before. I thoroughly enjoyed the ice cream. She also gave me last season's blueberry to try.

I got the fireweed icecream, it was good but would’ve been better if it didn’t have large ice chunks in it; especially at $10 for 1 scoop. Hopefully the quality improves for the current pricing.

I understand it’s a tourist economy but for $10 for a singular scoop you can offer both samples of the flavors I’ve choosing between. It was 1 sample person, ridiculous policy considering the price. I didn’t get ice cream becuase I was upset by this policy but my brother got the famous fireweed and it literally just tasted like vanilla. This place charges premium prices but offers a below average experience.
