The Story
This Asheville gem offers a true old-time lunch counter feel, reminiscent of the 1950s and '60s. You'll find excellent chicken salad, BLTs, and even 'big ass fried baloney sandwiches.' Don't miss watching the steaming hot dogs being prepared right before your eyes.

Stumbled upon this gem while visiting Asheville. Close to a wonderful independent bookstore so stopped in for lunch and nostalgia. My husband’s BLT and my chicken salad were excellent. So fun to sit at the lunch counter and see and listen. One of my favorite parts was watching a worker make a steaming, frothy hot chocolate with a machine that looked like it was from the 60s. After enjoying lunch at a great price, I was able to walk through the art gallery. The Soda Fountain is definitely a cool place to go!

If you want to experience an old-time lunch counter from the '50s and '60s, this is the place. They make malts and shakes and pretty good sandwiches. Apparently you're supposed to place your order on a tablet, but we didn't see that. The person who finally waited on us did not seem to want to be there.

If nostalgia is your thing, then the Woolworth Soda Fountain absolutely hits the mark. The second you walk in, it feels like you accidentally wandered into a simpler time where calories didn’t count and people still drank Coke from glass bottles (bonus points if you spot it in photo). Inside, you’re surrounded by local art and vintage charm, so technically you could place your order and browse while waiting. But Ray and I are still one of those couples who actually sit and talk to each other, so we claimed our seats and settled in for lunch with our boys. We’re both foodies, but I’m definite

Tucked away behind art exhibits lays a sandwich shop which proudly boasts big ass fried baloney sandwiches. I might argue these sandwiches are just as much art as any of the paintings surrounding you while you dine. My tuna melt was warm and packed with flavor and the big ass fried baloney sandwich (with EVERYTHING on it) lived up to its name. The milkshake was an average milkshake but I’m not docking a whole point for it.
