The Story
Open since 1857, the St. James General Store still has its pot-bellied stove, creaky floorboards and shelves of glass jars filled with penny candy. Grab a cold bottled soda from the case and eat your cone on the porch.

I have passed by the St. James General store so many times and always wanted to go in. This little shop is reminisce of what you would expect in Colonial days. It has a little bit of everything. You can find unique clothing, American flags, baby clothes, tees, etc. There are also a number of household items for the kitchen, handmade soap, aprons, towels, postcards, local honey and so much more. Be prepared to spend money because although some of the items may seem pricey, they support local businesses. Although there isn't a lot of parking, you can park down the road. It is a nice area and great for a walk during warmer seasons. On the side of the building there are picnic tables. This is great if you want to enjoy a snack or a light lunch with your family.

We like the St James General Store. It has been in continuous operation since the mid-1800's. When you walk in it is like stepping back in time to a different world. The front of the store has items you might have found in a bygone era. Large jars of assorted candies you can by by the 1/2 lb. There are jars of jams and jellies as well as honey. Assorted dry goods items like kitchen towels and pot holders. Old time post cards and assorted stoneware. They encourage you to go behind the counters for a closer look. Beyond the front of the store is a back room with more modern items like children's toys and handmade goods. There is a second floor although I did not explore it during this visit. The prices were fairly reasonable and they do accept debit or credit cards as well as cash. We ended up purchasing some jellies and honey and some salt water taffy. They have some nice memoribilia and right inside the door is a photo of the original owner and a brief history . Very little parking right in front of the store but there is an area directly across the street for additional parking.
