Wall Drug Store

The Story
Ted and Dorothy Hustead saved their failing 1931 drugstore by advertising free ice water to Badlands travelers, and Wall Drug grew into a block-long American oddity. The soda fountain, the nickel coffee and the free water are all still there.

A tourist trap but a fun one 😊free ice water & if you dine on 5cent coffee ☕️ Lots of different shops, even a chapel. Fun area out back too. The pie and donuts were good, pricey but it’s expected at a place like this. Worth the stop. You have to after seeing hundreds of miles of their billboards 😊

After seeing what feels like thousands of billboards stretching for hundreds of miles along I-90, we finally decided to pull over and see what Wall Drug was all about. Honestly, it ended up being a complete waste of a stop for us. I’m giving it three stars because I can’t single out anything specifically negative about the establishment—the staff is doing their jobs, it's maintained, and it delivers exactly what it promises. But make no mistake, it is a massive, sprawling tourist trap. The whole place basically operates as a giant, crowded indoor mall themed around cowboys and roadside kitsch. You wander through endless maze-like rooms packed to the brim with souvenirs, trinkets, and photo ops with giant fiberglass jackalopes. It’s chaotic and heavily commercialized. We grabbed the famous free ice water, looked around at the sheer scale of the tackiness, and realized almost immediately that we had fallen for the billboard hype. We couldn't get back to the highway fast enough. If you are someone who genuinely loves quirky, over-the-top, tacky roadside attractions, you might actually enjoy spending an hour or two getting lost in the shops. But if you're expecting something with actual substance behind all those signs, or if you just want a peaceful break on your road trip, do yourself a favor and save your time. Just keep driving.

Touristy? Yup. Kind of crowded? A bit. But it is absolutely positively a must stop if you’re passing remotely close to wall. The food was really good and the walk around experience was fun. Lots of shopping and curiosities to see. This is a spot. The whole family will enjoy. Don’t forget to check out their donuts that are made fresh on site. Plenty of stores to pick things up that you may want. Don’t forget to go out back onto the area that is known as the back porch. Several things to see back there as well. Absolutely positively highly recommend. We had fun.
