The Story

Zaharakos is the most opulent surviving soda fountain in America: two 1905 soda fountains, Tiffany-style lamps, an 1908 Welte orchestrion that still plays, and a museum of syrup dispensers along the wall. Order a Green River and let the organ do the rest.

This is a pleasant early 20th century sofa shop style ice cream parlor. Fabulous ice cream and great service. There were families nearby having a great time, but also having to work a birthday because the kids were in sugar heaven. A player organ plays out cheerful old tunes for a couple of quarters. I had a simple dish of strawberry with hot fudge. It was generous and scrumptious. A little bit of a wait because the place is popular, but worth it.

Great way to top off lunch with an ice cream dessert. Early Sunday was a good time to visit, wait was not long. The place looks very nostalgic and many of the options are also. Had chocolate cokes and sundaes, service was quick and friendly. Will definitely make it a point to stop back when we are in the area.

Writing this with one happy tummy and a satisfied soul from whimsy. I looked up somewhere fun and quirky to stop for lunch on our road trip and was recommended this historic ice cream and soda parlor that’s been around since 1900. I got the “gom sandwich” - an absolutely perfect sloppy joe - with fries and a strawberry shake. Ample space, cozy atmosphere, so many historical items to look at. They also serve beer and wine if you’re in the mood for spirits. In a very cool area with lots to do.
